Head of Public Affairs for the RSPCA, David Bowles explains the rise in puppies purchased from puppy farms during the lockdown and the consequences many new owners face as a result.
As I began the process of research into the surge in the demand for dogs in the U.K, the RSCPA was a brilliant source for statistics and gave me a great insight into the outcomes of the U.K's demand for dogs over the lockdown.
I spoke with David Bowles from the RSPCA who gave me a great insight into the specific health issues puppy farm puppies often develop as a result of inbreeding and unhygienic facilities.
David explained where the puppies for the English market have been sourced from over the course of the demand for puppies in the pandemic.
By using the acronym S.P.O.T, developed by the government, potential owners will be able to avoid deceitful and fraudulent sellers from selling them vulnerable puppies which could consequently cost a substantial amount of money in vet bills.
David explains what to look out for when searching for a puppy.
Chris Loder, the MP for West Dorset, introduced his Animal Welfare Sentencing Bill in the House of Commons on 5th February 2020.
The Private Members’ Bill will mean that the maximum penalty for certain offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 will be increased from six months to up to five years.
Offences under this Bill include:
- Cause unnecessary suffering to a protected animal
- Remove the whole or any part of a dog's tail other than for medical treatment
- Cause an animal fight to take place and knowingly receive money
- Carry out or cause prohibited procedures, such as mutilation
With the hope of this bill being passed, the RSPCA hopes they will see a decline in animal welfare cases.
