Mayhew Animal Home saw a huge spike in potential dog owners looking to adopt over the lockdown

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

The animal home, based in London, faced a vast number of interested owners searching for a fluffy companion over the lockdown.

With rescue centers across the U.K closing to abide by national coronavirus restrictions, many have had to adapt their services for the public.

Mayhew now has virtual tours of the centre online, with the option for owners to zoom call the centre during the adoption process.

I spoke to Tanya Madden, Deputy Head of Animal Welfare at Mayhew, and she explained the trends of people who have adopted that they have seen over the lockdown.

The charity has a number of schemes to support those in need. They include: adoption services, a community vet clinic that provides free and low-cost veterinary services as well as international work.

The charity has helped support many owners who have struggled through the lockdowns with the impact of coronavirus on; jobs, family life, and mental health who may have subsequently had to give up their pet.

Tanya explains their support services in the video below.
