The Government has begun its process to end live animal exports for slaughter and fattening.
West Dorset MP, Chris Loder introduced his Animal Welfare Bill in October, proposing toucher enforcements for animal welfare offences.
The new bill will ban the export of live, well-cared-for farm animals loaded into lorries and sent thousands of miles away into countries like Libya and Lebanon.
Leaving the EU has enabled the U.K government to introduce these plans as the EU's trading rules on the movement of animals abroad.
Chris Loder said: "Today’s announcement is a victory for animal welfare. Through my Animal Welfare Bill, which reaches the Committee Stage early next year, I hope not only to achieve tougher custodial sentences for those who inflict the worst kinds of cruelty on innocent animals; but also to deal with the cruelty that has been happening on a mass scale, such as with live animal exports.”
